How to Score an Elk
Elk are scored the same way as whitetail, with more points and bigger numbers. Measure each main beam along the outside curve from the burr to the tip. Measure every point that is at least one inch long and longer than it is wide at the base: the brow (G1), bez (G2), trez (G3), dagger or royal (G4), and the G5, G6 and G7 if he carries them. Take the four circumference measurements at the smallest place between points (H1 through H4).
Gross Score = Inside Spread Credit + both Main Beams + all Point Lengths + all Circumferences
Net Score = Gross Score minus side to side Symmetry Deductions minus Abnormal Point Lengths
This calculator covers the typical category. Abnormal points, anything that does not come off the main beam in the normal pattern, are deducted from a typical score and added to a non-typical score. If your bull has a lot of extra junk, score him as a non-typical on the official sheet.

Minimums are published by the Boone and Crockett Club and the Pope and Young Club. Official entry requires a certified measurer and a 60-day drying period.
What Counts as a Good Bull?
- 250 to 300 inches: a solid public land bull. A 5x5 or young 6x6. Most hunters would tag him without a second thought.
- 300 to 330 inches: a mature 6x6. Good beams, decent mass, the bull you plan a whole season around.
- 330 to 360 inches: a true trophy. Long daggers and heavy mass. A wall bull anywhere in the West.
- 360 to 375 inches: Awards book class. Limited-entry unit or private ranch caliber.
- 375+ inches net typical: the Boone & Crockett all-time minimum. A once in a lifetime bull.

How do you score a bull elk?
Measure both main beams, the inside spread, every point one inch or longer (G1 through G6 or G7), and the four smallest circumferences between points on each antler. Add everything for the gross score, then subtract the side to side differences for the net Boone and Crockett score.
What is the Boone and Crockett minimum for elk?
Typical American elk: 360 for the Awards book and 375 for the All-time book. Non-typical American elk: 385 for both. Roosevelt elk: 275 Awards and 290 All-time. Tule elk: 270 Awards and 285 All-time. The Pope and Young minimum for a typical American elk taken with a bow is 260.
What does a 6x6 bull elk usually score?
A mature 6x6 with 45 to 50 inch beams and a 40 inch spread typically grosses 300 to 340. Long G4 daggers and heavy mass are what push a bull into the 350 to 375 range. A 400 class bull is rare enough that most hunters never see one on the hoof.
What is the world record typical elk?
The Boone and Crockett world record typical American elk scores 442 5/8, taken by Alonzo Winters in the White Mountains of Arizona in 1968. The non-typical record is the Spider Bull at 478 5/8, taken in Utah in 2008.
