How to Measure Deer Antlers. Every Line, Step by Step

Scoring is arithmetic. Measuring is where the score is actually won or lost. Here is where the tape goes on every line, what gear you need, and the handful of mistakes that add phantom inches to almost every home score.

The Gear, Honestly Assessed

Search "deer scoring kit" and you will find bundles running $40 to $100. Most of what is in them is filler. Here is what actually changes your number.

  • A quarter inch flexible steel cable tape. Required. This is the tool official measurers use, and there is no substitute. It follows the curve of a main beam without lifting off the surface. Expect to pay $15 to $25.
  • A flexible steel measuring tape in eighths. Required. For the eight circumference measurements and the spreads. A tailor tape will not do, it stretches.
  • Masking tape or a grease pencil. Required, and free. You need to mark the baseline where each tine meets the beam. This is the difference between a real score and a fantasy one.
  • Alligator clips. Nice to have. Holds the cable in place on the beam so you are not fighting it one handed.
  • A folding carpenter rule. Nice to have. Makes the inside spread measurement easier because it holds itself rigid across the beams.

Everything is recorded to the nearest one eighth inch. Not the nearest quarter, not the nearest half. Eighths.

The Order to Work In

Do it in this sequence and you will not have to redo anything.

  1. 1. Count points. Before the tape comes out. Get right and left counts down on paper.
  2. 2. Mark your tine baselines. Go around the whole rack with masking tape or a grease pencil and mark where every point leaves the beam. Doing all of them at once keeps you consistent.
  3. 3. Spreads. Tip to tip, greatest spread, inside spread. Only inside spread scores.
  4. 4. Main beams. Right, then left. Start at the low outside edge of the burr, run the center of the outer surface, finish at the tip.
  5. 5. Tines, in order. G-1 through however many, right side then left side. Measure from the line you marked.
  6. 6. Circumferences. H-1 through H-4 on each side. Find the smallest spot in each segment. Do not just measure the middle.
  7. 7. Abnormals last. Anything that is not part of the matching frame.

What Counts as a Point

The rule is simple but people get it wrong constantly. A projection is a point if:

  • It is at least one inch long, measured from the tip to the nearest edge of the beam, and
  • Its length exceeds its width at one inch or more from the tip

The beam tip counts as a point but is never measured as one, its length is already captured in the beam measurement. A stub that is an inch tall but two inches wide at the base is not a point, it is a bump. When you are arguing about it at the tailgate, the second half of the rule is usually the one settling it.

Five Mistakes That Add Phantom Inches

  • Measuring tines from the bottom of the tine. Costs you nothing, gains you two to four inches of score that is not there. The baseline is the beam surface, not the visible tine base.
  • Running the tape on the inside curve of the beam. Boone and Crockett specifies the outer curve. Inside reads short, and hunters who know this sometimes do it accidentally by letting the cable settle.
  • Taking circumferences at a comfortable spot instead of the smallest spot. Each H measurement has to be at the narrowest point in its segment. That is often awkward to reach. Reach it anyway.
  • Giving full credit for a spread wider than the beams. Inside spread credit is capped at the length of the longer main beam. A 22 inch spread on 20 inch beams gets credited as 20.
  • Rounding up. An eighth on each of twenty lines is two and a half inches of fiction. Round to the nearest eighth, both directions.

Measuring Without a Tape

Most of the time you want a number, the deer is still alive and standing in front of a trail cam. You cannot tape him. You can still measure him, using the deer himself as the ruler.

On a mature whitetail, ear tip to ear tip with the ears alert runs roughly 15 to 17 inches, and a single ear is around 6 to 7 inches long. The circumference of the eye is close to 4 inches. Those three references let you eyeball inside spread, tine length, and mass off a photo with real discipline instead of hope.

What tape do I need to measure deer antlers?

A quarter inch flexible steel cable tape for beams and tines, and a flexible steel tape for circumferences and spread. Both marked in eighths of an inch. A cloth sewing tape stretches and will read long. A rigid carpenter tape will not follow the curve of a beam and will read short. The cable tape is the one piece of the kit worth spending money on.

Where exactly does a tine measurement start?

At the point where the tine leaves the main beam, not at the bottom of the visible tine. The way measurers do it is to lay the tape flat across the beam so it bridges the base of the tine, draw a line where the tape crosses, and measure from that line to the tip along the outer curve. Skipping this step is the single most common reason a home score comes in high.

How do I measure antlers still on a live deer?

You cannot, with a tape. What you can do is estimate using known reference points on the deer's head. A mature whitetail's ear tip to ear tip spread runs roughly 15 to 17 inches with ears alert, and ear length is about 6 to 7 inches. How many circumference measurements are there?

Four per antler, eight total, labeled H-1 through H-4. They are always taken at the smallest place in each defined segment, not at a fixed distance. On a typical eight point with no G-4, the H-4 measurement is taken halfway between G-3 and the tip of the main beam.

Does an antler measurement change as it dries?

Yes. Antlers shrink slightly as moisture leaves them, which is why Boone and Crockett requires a 60 day drying period at normal room temperature before an official measurement. A green score taken the day of the kill will typically read a couple inches higher than the final dried number.
